Doing what is right vs. doing what is real
Do we choose to do the right thing or we choose to do what is real?
You must be puzzled with that question. Allow me to explain the difference.
Doing the right thing is what everyone is familiar with, doing what the world deemed to be right i.e. feed the poor, help the marginalized, look after the elderly, etc. etc.
Doing what is real is slightly related to doing what is right. Doing what is real is more on a personal basis. Being real, is the core of it. Being real meaning knowing that we will never be perfect and therefore will always succumb to temptations and distractions from all factors. Doing what is real is more of doing what is practical to your current condition. You may not have the access or exposure to the poor or the marginalized to allow you to "serve" them. You may be so caught up with work and other commitments such as family or involvement in religious activities, etc. You have the intention to do what is right, but when put in such condition, you have to choose to do what is "right" for your condition. the practical and sensible choice.
It is always not easy. The brain and the heart would not be in moving in similar motion, and will always put you in a dilemma on the choice to be made. You heart wants to do the right thing, but your head will ask you to do what is real. How many times have you been caught in such situation? How do you choose?
I hate being put in such situation, because it will somehow lead you to guilt or selfishness for choosing one over the other. Most of the time, definitely the choice would be doing what is real, all because doing what is right is hard and may not guarantee our expectations of it at the end. Usually doing what is real is what brings you pleasure, temporary joy and contentment, or just a feeling of freedom.
I can openly talk and understand about this whole thing because it happens so so frequently to me....especially lately. With my new job, which was a dream come true, I am always caught in this dilemma, because for all the shit in the world, you would not want to jeopardise your dream job at any cost. you would want to excel and not fail miserably in it. It is your dream job after all. who has such an opportunity any other day, right? It is go big or go home...never in between.... and therefore, I am often caught in such dilemma.
Don't know to choose to do what is right or to just do what is real..... God help me. Amen.
